THE TRANSITS OF URANUS THROUGH THE HOUSES
The nature of the transitions that result from the crossing of the World Ages will continue to increase personal as well as world tensions. The juxtaposition of the forces and forms of expression inherent in the past Age of Pisces and the coming Age of Aquarius directs our attention to the tremendous polarizations that are manifesting in our lives. There is the very real threat of a seemingly never-ending stream of moral and physical pollution rising to the surface of our lives for cleansing. At the very same time, we are living in a period in which global spiritual awareness and the positive creative opportunities which this brings to humanity have never been greater. Never have separatist egos, thoughts, feelings, and actions been so threatening to world peace.
A.O. (1980)
Uranus is a most powerful influence whose power and potency change lives in profound and irrevocable ways. He is known as the “Father of Archetypes” for in Greek mythology he is Ouranos, the sky god who married Gaia, the earth goddess and produced the first generation of Olympians. One of the strongest of these was Saturn (Cronos in Greek, from which we get our word, “chronology” or time, hence Saturn is also known as Father Time). Saturn wanted his father’s power and with the help of his mother Gaia, fashioned a sharp sickle and castrated Uranus, throwing his severed organs into the sea. But Uranus’ generative power was stronger than Saturn’s ambitious urges. Venus (Aphrodite in Greek, the goddess of love) emerged fully formed out of Uranus’ penis while an entire new generation of gods and goddesses were born out of Uranus’ seminal foam.
This story serves to illustrate the point that time (Cronos) can never inhibit the flowering of love (Venus) nor can time stop the evolution of consciousness (the new gods that occupy our lives). Indeed, the goddess Aphrodite is not only the goddess of personal love (one of her children was Eros), but the ancient Greeks also thought of her as the goddess of the impersonal love that binds a society together. In this respect, soul-centered astrology teaches that the esoteric ruler of Libra is Uranus and thus the combination of the energies of Venus and her father Uranus, join the principles of love in terms of both the personality and the soul.
The transits of Uranus through our natal horoscope bring us the opportunities to overthrow the static conditions of time in terms of the consolidated patterns in which we related to life. In astrological terminology this means that Uranus is stronger than both Saturn and the Earth. As the Greek mythological tale reveals, time (Cronos) and matter (Gaia) tried to inhibit the developmental flow of the birth of new gods and goddesses (our inner powers and strengths) but failed in their attempt. Yet human nature being what it is becomes attached to form and matter over time. We fear the new and the different often being content with our established life patterns and sink into old age (Saturn’s domain) fighting against change. It is thus that Saturn is the ruler of arthritis both the physical and mental varieties of the disease.
Many people thus fear Uranus for he represents changes of the most intense kind. It should be remembered that Uranus has its exaltation in Scorpio and is thus at his most potent in the sign of sexuality and transformation. Uranus is also known as the “planetary rebel, the outsider, and the bohemian.” People who have Uranus very strongly placed in their horoscopes are marked with an “I” across their foreheads. This “I” stands for independent, individualistic, and the phrase, “I am me and no one else is like me!” Such placements include: Uranus conjunct the Ascendant, Sun or Moon or Uranus in very strong aspect to any of these three factors.
As we know, Uranus is the exoteric ruler of the sign Aquarius whose secondary ruler is Saturn! These two opposing forces give rise to two types of Aquarians. The Uranian type is always and ever independent. He or she is an individual who leads life according to his or her own rules. A willful person by nature, the Uranian Aquarian is stubborn and insistent on his or her own way of doing things, ways that are often against the popular tide. Although Aquarius is the sign of groups, the true Uranian has a horror of conforming to socially imposed rules and regulations. This is a person whose only group is one composed of other social “exiles.” This is a man or woman who is attracted only to people who feel that they too are not part of the commonly accepted norms of social behavior. When spiritually aware, these Uranians do indeed gather in groups—groups of conscious men and woman in whose heart Venus has risen out of the waters of compassion. This Uranian group is called “The New Group of World Servers” and it is open to all men and women of all races and religions and of course of to all the twelve signs of the zodiac.
The Saturnine Aquarian may think of herself as unusually different, but is a conformist by nature. This is a person who seeks to impose his political or spiritual beliefs on everyone else in the world. “My way of looking at life is the only way,” he states. These are people who tend to be drawn to groups of men or women who conform to established religious and/or political groups and organizations whose aim is to maintain material and social power in their own hands. When acting on their own, they tend to be separatist, highly independent and aloof, and confirmed in their own value system even if it is a value system of one. The Saturnine Aquarians follow fads while the Uranian Aquarians invent them and then move on after such social movements or trends have become popular.
At the present time, Uranus is still transiting through Pisces (actually on February 1, 2007 Uranus is at nearly 13 degrees of the Fish). It will remain in this sign until crossing for the first time into Aries on May 28, 2010. It returns briefly into Pisces on August 14, 2010 and then enters into Aries again on March 12, 2011 where it will remain for approximately seven years. Uranus in Pisces has a lot to do with changes and challenges in religious and spiritual beliefs and currents. When activated on earthy, physical levels in Pisces, it is known to bring floods (ex. Katrina), torrents and hurricanes. In January and October of 2007, Uranus in Pisces will be square Jupiter (Lord of Thunder), so it is quite possible that we will see a great deal of difficult weather patterns in the winter and fall of this year. These months may also be witness to strong religious clashes in the world as the combination of these two planets in their respective signs bring forth conflicts on the level of the Sixth Ray, the Ray of Religion and Idealism.
Uranus in Pisces on the personal level also evokes inner revolutions based on very old and stored feelings and beliefs about oneself. Pisces is the sign where emotions are collected and held deeply within the context of our subconscious. Transits of Uranus will stimulated the coming forth of these stored memory units so that we may cleanse our inner waters, evoke a greater globalization of consciousness in ourselves and awaken to Uranus’s “love child,” Venus/Aphrodite. Look to the house or houses that Uranus is transiting in your chart to see where such challenges and opportunities will arise for you. The time it takes for Uranus to transit a house depends on the number of degrees that the specific house contains. Thus if you are using the Equal House system with 30 degrees in each of your houses, Uranus will stay about 7 years in each of the astrological domiciles. As the majority of astrologers use either Placidus or Koch houses, this time can vary greatly, so compare your natal chart with the ephemeris and you will have an exact picture of the length of Uranus’ movements through the houses of your particular horoscope. And always remember that the effects of Uranus’ transits are always sudden and unexpected.
Uranus transiting through the First House: When Uranus reaches your natal Ascendant you can honestly say: “Good-by old self and hello to a new world for me!” Yes, Uranus’ visit to this vital point in your chart happens only once in a lifetime and when it does, you will never be the same again. This will be a time when you will find yourself with the deepest urge to change the status quo in your life—you will most likely leave whatever it is that you are doing and never look back again. At the very least, you will make extraordinary changes in yourself and in your relationships to others as the Descendant (place of relationship contact to others) is directly opposed the Ascendant (place of relationship to oneself). For the remaining years of this transit through the First House, you will be working to shape that new self and adjust to the life situations that come about as a result of this major shift in your life direction.
Uranus transiting through the Second House: This is the house of personal values, talents and resources. Look for a period in which your personal life values take amazing turnabouts. You will be revising the ways in which you use your abilities and make many adjustments accordingly. Your financial state will also be strongly affected. Should Uranus passing through your Second House trine, conjoin, or sextile either Jupiter and/or Venus, sudden windfalls may come to you. But these bountiful situations may be tempered if Jupiter and/or Venus are natally afflicted by Saturn, then such abundance may be strongly modified. Uranus in positive aspect to the Sun while passing through the Second will give you new creative insights as to how you can make better use of your life resources. Uranus in positive aspect to the ruler of the Eighth House while passing through the Second can result in positive financial returns from either previous investments and/or inheritances.
Uranus transiting through the Third House: This is the house of your personal opinions and mental processes. Look for far reaching changes in the ways you thinks about life and the opinions that you hold. You may be stimulated to begin a study of new things and find yourself back in school taking courses to enhance your life. Astrology and metaphysics are ruled by Uranus, so do not be surprised that your studies of these subjects began when Uranus was transiting this house or in aspect to the ruler of the Third or in aspect to planets in your Third. New situations in terms of your relationships to your brother, sisters or closest friends also happen when Uranus passes through this domicile.
Uranus transiting through the Fourth House: In general, very major life happenings occur when Uranus crosses one of the four angles of the natal chart. The cusp of the Fourth, the IC is one of these major points (the others are: the Ascendant, Descendant and the MC). The transit of Uranus over the IC will often result in one or more of the following situations: you will change domiciles, your domestic situation will shift most profoundly, and old psychological patterns will come up for examination and cleansing. Should Uranus cross over the IC or pass through the Fourth House and at the same time make a strong aspect to your natal Moon and/or the ruler of the Fourth, these three above-mentioned situations will be definitely life changing. In addition, your relationship to your mother, to women, and to the archetype of the feminine in general will be especially important to you now.
Uranus transiting through the Fifth House: This is the house of your creative self-expression as well as an important indicator of your relationships to your children. When Uranus comes here for a visit look for important changes to the ways you seek to express yourself. These are years in which you will explore new ways to become yourself through the pursuit of your inner creative drives. People who before this transit felt that there was little original creativity living within their brain cells, become incredibly surprised to see just what they can produce. Your interactions with your children will shift. This is often a time when new children may enter one’s life either through birth or through the coming of grandchildren. In addition, one’s own offspring become much more independent when Uranus passes through this domicile and leave our care, giving us the additional freedom in life to pursue our own interests.
Uranus transiting through the Sixth House: This is the house of work as well as health. Uranus coming into the Sixth can bring new opportunities to pursue practical interests and increase our income potential. At the very least, we will find ourselves bored with our current job and work situation, becoming open to search for new ways and means to earn a living. Should we have a difficult health condition and Uranus is positively aspecting planets (especially the Sun, Moon or ruler of the Sixth) while transiting this house, we will find different means of health care that improve our physical condition. On the other hand, should Uranus while transiting this domicile bring difficult aspects to the ruler of the Sixth and or planets in the Sixth (especially if one of these planets is the Sixth House ruler), then health difficulties are likely to ensue.
Uranus transiting through the Seventh House: Look for major changes to our relationship condition when Uranus crosses into this house. As the Seventh (Descendant) is directly opposed to the Ascendant, Uranus at this important point in the natal chart challenges our relationship to ourselves through our relationship with others. We may easily find ourselves confined by our present relationship and seek to sever that tie in order to bring us into contact with other people. Very often, Uranus on the Descendant and/or transiting the Seventh will suddenly bring us face to face with someone with whom we feel an instantaneous and profound attraction. The results of such a meeting can have devastating effects on current relationship dynamics. Look for aspects to Venus and/or to the ruler of the Seventh House while Uranus is transiting therein in terms of the timing of such meetings. Your handy ephemeris is always your best guide in these matters! In general, Uranus through the Seventh brings us into contact with new archetypes in terms of our personal interactions. It is therefore quite common during this transit to find oneself saying: “Gosh, I never met or was attracted to that type of person before!”
Uranus transiting through the Eighth House: This is the house of sexuality, other people’s financial resources, and deep personal transformations. As Uranus is exalted in the Eighth House’s natural sign of Scorpio, its effects while passing trough this domicile are very potent. In some cases, people find that their sexual orientation changes during these years and/or that they become very sexually experimental. Old patterns of sexual intimacy are challenged and there is a strong drive to express oneself very differently in this area of life. This would be especially the case should Uranus be in strong aspect to Mars, Pluto and/or the ruler of the Eighth while passing through this domicile. Should Uranus be in aspect to Venus, Jupiter and/or the ruler of the Eighth (especially of Venus or Jupiter is the ruler of the Eighth), then look for inheritance to be an issue that suddenly arises in life. At the very least, this is a life changing time, one in which old psychological patterns that involve one’s deepest desires come up for examination.
Uranus transiting through the Ninth House: As the house of one’s spiritual path as well as the house that opens the way to higher learning, Uranus passing through the Ninth is very significant in terms of one’s inner development. Jupiter, the natural ruler of this house is the soul-centered ruler of Aquarius, Uranus’ natural sign. Should an individual feel called to the spiritual life, the transit of Uranus through the Ninth will therefore greatly aid and support this orientation. This is a time when many people undergo religious conversion, abandoning their old faith and belief system only to replace it with one that is more global and less separatist. Thus this transit of Uranus can be most rewarding, especially if it aspects either Jupiter or the ruler of the Ninth while it is going through this domicile. At the very least, this is a time when one will feel the call for higher learning in a field very different from the one in which they were earlier educated.
Uranus transiting through the Tenth House: This is the last of the four major angles of the natal chart, the MC. When Uranus touches this point as it enters the Tenth, look for major career changes to take place in one’s life. This is a time when a person is likely to leave behind a career that they have cultivated for many years in pursuit of something that brings out a greater sense of individuality. If this transit occurs in one’s 50’s, one will be inclined to take early retirement and open oneself to the search and/or creation of new career possibilities. Uranus passing through the Tenth also stimulates the urge to release previous social responsibilities. We want freedom from Saturn’s house and influence and the chance to open ourselves to a new social role. Indeed, should Uranus actually be in strong aspect with Saturn and/or the natal ruler of the Tenth, then what has just been stated will be an especially powerful urge.
Uranus transiting through the Eleventh House: Uranus is now entering its own house and its effects will be very important during the years of its passage therein. Look for the creation of new friendships with different kinds of people then previously in life. For many people, this will mean saying “good-by” to established relationships and especially to the value system one has shared with others. Friendships and social associations require that we believe in the same codes of behavior. For example, should we be vegetarians and decide that we now wish to eat meat, it will be very difficult to dine with our vegetarian friends, not just because of differences of food choices, but also because our shared values around animal life has changed. Uranus transiting through the Eleventh will also often coincide with new interests in social evolution. We may therefore find ourselves taking up humanitarian causes that suddenly call to us and thus find ourselves in entirely new social circumstances.
Uranus transiting through the Twelfth House: As the Twelfth is the house where we connect to the larger field of human experience and feelings, Uranus passing through this domicile often awakens a very deep spiritual contact to the collective consciousness. This is a wonderful time for the study and practice of the occult sciences and metaphysics as Uranus (especially in Pisces!) will awaken a deeper connection of the meaning of life to our burgeoning awareness. From a more psychological perspective, should we have anything hiding in the closet of our subconscious, look for Uranus passing through the Twelfth to bring this out into the open. Uranus does not like secrets—it is a bold influence that seeks to carry us forth into new experiences cleansed of the old. Look to the placement of Uranus in your natal chart to see where a lot of revelations will take place. For example, Uranus transiting the Twelfth and natally in your Seventh, will show you what you need to cleanse and renew through situations arising out of your relationships.
